Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
